5 Ways to Update Tradition for 2023 Wedding Trends

When designing weddings, there are a lot of traditional elements that get used often.  It’s easy to want to use the pretty idea you saw at your friend's wedding last summer, but following trends is the easiest way to make sure your wedding blends in with all of the others.

The personal touches and the story behind those details are what make a wedding feel special and unique.  Thinking creatively about design details can be challenging when you’re not familiar with the options or how to build something custom, which is where a wedding planner can work with you to create a mood board and refresh some of the trendy ideas you’ve already seen to make them uniquely yours.

Here are a few of our favorite ideas for the coming year.

1. Deconstructed Candelabra

Traditional: It’s very traditional to incorporate a candelabra into the centerpieces.  They’re beautiful, standing 2 feet tall and with the hanging crystal they are eye catching, but they are common.

Refresh: We love to see our clients opt for a tablescape mixing wood and brass candleholders spread across their long tables in a more deconstructed look.  They can be connected with greenery, fruit and other elements to bring in the couple’s personality.

2.  Charcuterie Displays

Traditional:  Grazing tables with brilliant spreads of charcuterie are classic to a reception buffet.  We’re used to seeing chaffing dishes and oversized table displays that can be crowded and picked over.

Refresh:  It’s right up our alley with an al fresco style to move these classic displays and incorporate them into the tablescapes.  They are manageable and can give a more family style feel to the celebration.  They go great with our deconstructed candelabras too.

3.  Extra parties with elevated experiences

Traditional:  I’ve come to expect that a post wedding brunch will follow the wedding celebration.  It’s one last chance for guests to come together and to thank them before heading home to wind down from the festivities.

Refresh:  The brunch isn’t going anywhere, but the idea of a full weekend, with welcome parties and after parties is more present than ever.  Invite your guests to join you for a field day style welcome gathering where they can get competitive.  Or even consider a beach party to get people together as they arrive.  It doesn’t stop there though.  After-parties are wild and popular this year.  Consider extending the celebration with a trip down the shore on a yacht or visit the local speakeasy for a few extra cocktails before winding down for the night.

4. Color

Traditional: White is a go to color for most classic brides.  We love the white because it brings in a lot of natural light.  Often there are accent colors like pink bridesmaid dresses or red rose centerpieces.  Beautiful pops of color can be classic for any wedding design.

Refresh:  Pops of color will be brighter in 2023, but also not limited to solids.  We’re excited to see lots of bright patterns in custom decor and textiles.  Bright, playful florals will be a sight to see in the coming months.  Color, especially with patterns, is a beautiful way to make the decor personal and uniquely yours.

5. Private Last Dance

Traditional: When couples enter the reception, it’s common for them to take center stage with a public first dance, sometimes choreographed.  It’s an outward display of their love and closeness.

Refresh: Many newlyweds have started showing interest in taking a moment at the end of the night to themselves to really soak in the magic that makes the milestone so special by closing out the night with a private last dance after the room has cleared leaving only the couple, the band and the photographer.
